All students who do not have credit for a college level mathematics course will have to take the online mathematics placement exam.
It requires up to 90 minutes of your time. Calculators and outside assistance are prohibited. If you violate these rules, you will likely be placed into a mathematics course for which you are not prepared. Such a misplacement will likely result in your losing time and money.
If you are unsure if you have college level mathematics credit, you should take the online placement exam. Placement exam scores will be transferred to the registration system within 48 hours of your having completed the exam. Do not telephone the mathematics department to inform us of your score; the registration system will pick up the score automatically.
Do not call the Mathematics Department to explain your special circumstance. If you have received transfer credit for a mathematics course at another institution, then this information will be in our registration system, and it will appear on your academic transcripts. If it does not appear, then you should take the placement exam.
Prerequisites for all mathematics courses are strictly enforced. They are as follows:
To place into Math 110, you must have a placement exam score of 35 or have completed DS084, DS090, or MTH100. Note Math 110 is not a prerequisite for any other mathematics course. If your major area requires advanced mathematics and you have a placement exam score below 66, then you should register for Developmental Studies.
To place into Math 112, you must have completed DS084, DS090, or MTH 100 or have a mathematics placement exam score of 66 or more.
To place into Math 113, you must have a grade of C or better in Math 112, or a placement exam score of 75 or more.
To place into Math 115, you must have completed DS084, DS090, MTH 100, or have a mathematics placement exam score of 75 or more. You cannot receive credit for both Math 115 and either Math 112 or Math 113. Math 115 is an accelerated four hour course that covers topics similar to those covered in the combination of Math 112 and Math 113.
To place into Math 120 or Math 267 you must have completed any of Math 112, Math 113, Math 115 (with a C or better) or have a mathematics placement exam score of 75 or above. Note: You may not receive credit for both Math 120 and Math 125, and Math 120 is not a prerequisite for any subsequent mathematics course.
To place into Math 125, you must have completed Math 113 or Math 115 (with a C or better) or have a mathematics placement exam of 85 or more.
To place into a subsequent Calculus course (Math 126 or Math 227) you must have earned a grade of C or better in the prerequisite course. Math 125 is a prerequisite for Math 126. Math 126 is a prerequisite for Math 227. Advanced placement (AP) scores may be used in place of prerequisites.
Freshmen admitted with special requirements should not take the online University Mathematics Placement Exam. Their placement will be determined by the Department of Developmental Studies during Orientation.
