FAQs
What is The Mobile Mathematics Circle program about?

A problem solving program called “The Mobile Mathematics Circle" will be offered to secondary students from Mobile County.  The students will be instructed in a variety of problem-solving topics, including Number Theory, Game Theory, Graph Theory and Optimization Theory, that they would not encounter in the usual high school mathematics curriculum. This program was first offered in 2000-2001.

What is the mission of the Mobile Mathematics Circle?

The mission of the Mobile Mathematics Circle is to introduce students to mathematics as a creative thinking tool through problem solving. The   student who will contribute to the nation's space exploration efforts must learn early to grapple with problems where work is required even to understand the question and where the hardest part of a solution may well be to identify or even create an appropriate mathematical technique.  The Mobile Mathematics Circle will help students take their first serious mathematical steps.

What is the purpose of the Math Circle?

The Mathematics Circle is designed to teach mathematics as a thinking tool more than as a computational tool.  As such it will benefit students, whose studies lead them into any problem solving discipline, including fields as far removed from mathematics as economics, chemistry, engineering, or even business.

Is there any fee for the program?

We don’t charge any fee for the program. The Mobile Mathematics Circle will organize the Mobile Mathematics Olympiad open free to all high school students.

How do the mathematics circle meetings help students?
The weekly meetings of a mathematics circle are more structured than those of the typical math club. A specific topic is chosen for each session. The relevant theory   serves as a basis for solving problems grouped around a common theme. Thus, students receive systematic training in mathematical problem solving. They are provided with  the tools and exposed to the necessary techniques, but most importantly, they are given the opportunity to apply these with imagination and originality both during the Circle meetings working with others and at home  attacking homework problems on their own. The students learn that solving a good problem is not a five minute affair, but one that could last hours or even days, requiring both intense concentration and enthusiasm.

What is the Mathematics Olympiad?

There are a number of interesting and fun mathematics events including mathematical competitions and Olympiads for high school students in the United States of America. Over the past 100 years throughout the world the word “Olympiad" has come to mean the particular type of competition where complete essays are expected for every problem and adequate time is offered to participants to make a thorough investigation. We will award travel scholarships to two students to participate in one of these Olympiads. They will be selected on the basis of their performance on the Mobile Mathematics Olympiad to be held in Spring semester.

Who will be eligible to take the Olympiad?

The Olympiad is a two-hour written examination. All high school and middle school students are eligible to enter. There is no entry fee. The problems will require students to use imagination and creativity more than advanced mathematical skills. Students will have fun working on them.
