TeX/LaTeX Word Processing for Windows:

1) MikTex: MiKTeX (pronounced mick-tech) is a free and up-to-date implementation of TeX and LaTex for Windows (all current variants) on x86 systems. This can be downloaded from http://www.miktex.org/ . The installing instructions are at the URL: http://miktex.org/manual/installing.html#instinstr . Install “Total MiKTeX” which includes all packages.

2) TeXnicCenter: TeXnicCenter (pronounced tech-nic center) is a free and feature rich integrated development environment (IDE) for developing LaTeX-documents on Microsoft Windows (Windows 9x/ME, NT/2000/XP) freely available under GPL This can be downloaded from http://www.texniccenter.org/

3) GSVeiw and GhostScript: GSview is a free graphical interface for Ghostscript. We need it to view psfiles. For more info: http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/gsview/ . GSView can be downloaded from http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/gsview/get47.htm . GhostScript can be downloaded from http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/doc/AFPL/get851.htm

For the editor instead of TeXnicCenter, one can also use:

2a) WinEdt: WinEdt (shareware) is a powerful and versatile ASCII editor and shell for MS Windows with a strong predisposition towards the
creation of [La]TeX documents. http://www.winedt.com/ . WinEdt is not free and registration costs $40 for faculty and $30 for students. 

MikTex and TeXnicCenter is installed on all machines in the labs ILB 405 and ILB 245.

TeX/LaTeX Word Processing for Macs:  TeXShop: http://www.uoregon.edu/~koch/texshop/  (one program does it all !)
